Shootout Youth Sports Photography | Blog

Welcome to my blog!

As you know, my focus is on youth sports photography and goal is to capture shots which reflect a child's love of sports.  In this blog I will share with you my successes, failures, learnings, opinions, etc. around photography and videography, interject what it's like working with models (aka my kids), and comment on turning a found passion into a viable small business.  I hope you enjoy the journey, and ask that you join in the fun...

It's all about focus!

The weeks continue to be busy, with day job activities, family commitments, and personal pursuits...  Including being a bit more aggressive in "introducing" my website.  I've added a number of new events, become more disciplined in using keywords in my photographs, and decided to move beyond simply clicking (Auto) to improve my images in Photoshop.  While I'm not about wholesale manipulation, a little white balance nip or exposure tuck can't hurt!

Unfortunately, the elephant in the room remains, and no it's not a bigger lens or having a more sophisticated camera, it's all about focus.  Being able to instruct the camera to focus on the things YOU want it to, and not having IT decide what IT wants to capture.  This is something that even professional photographers struggle with, and is likely what life is about.

Since I haven't a clue about the later, let me share with you some techniques on photography focus.  Here's what a few "experts" have to say:

Working out the kinks and learning a new skill

It was a busy weekend, filled with shooting the 7/8th Grade St.Bernadette Bulldogs Scrimmage at Rush for a Cause (www.rushforacause.org) and a New Parishioner's Welcome Brunch.  I had big expectations for both events, but came away disappointed with the sharpness of sports photographs taken and realized I've got a lot to learn before I'll add "in your face" street photography to my repertoire.  But hey, even an professional (not signing) idol (Scott Kelby) experienced similar difficulties (http://bit.ly/NRpEQS), so maybe I was a bit hard on myself...

The Flag Football Season Starts Now

August 16, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

I'm guessing you're a lot like me and have a number of plates spinning on sticks simultaneously.  Unfortunately, I've never worked in a circus or took such a class in college (my dad might disagree with that as I enjoyed a number of years at "The" Ohio State University), so it was no surprise that this week's goal came crashing down.  I thought the schedule was locked down, and being able to shoot the 1st - 4th Grade Flag Football Combine on Tuesday and Thursday was a done deal.  A relationship review and product presentation for a west coast client took care of day 1, and day 2 succumbed to a City of Rocky River Board Meeting, where we'll be making a case for continued bussing.  Seeing the positives here, a job is important as it makes many things possible, and if bussing continues I avoid being stuck in the car line...  Is it wrong for me to hope for rain tonight?
